Artist of the Month
Ruth Oliphant

Ruth Oliphant
Ruth Oliphant graduated with honours from the Australian National University’s glass workshop Canberra in 2008.  Upon graduating she was awarded the Australian Decorative and Fine Art Society Award, the Embassy of Spain Award and the Canberra Glassworks Residency Award. She has gained recognition  as an emerging artist and has exhibited both nationally and internationally with  Kirra Galleries in Melbourne and at SOFA (Sculpture Objects & Functional Art) Expo in  Chicago for the past three years.   She is currently working out of a studio at The Canberra Glassworks.

Ruth originally studied architecture.  These links can be seen in her work as a glass artist where she is seen to recreate an essential aspect of the modern city based on her experiences and memories. Her current body of work in Kirra Galleries relates to spaces that once held important moments in her life but now exist in memories.  The works have changed from external experiences to internal spaces. She has used windows as a metaphor through which to look into these spaces and into the past.

Her pieces are constructed by layering fused painted and carved glass blocks, some of which are transparent and others opaque. In combination the imagery appears three dimensional and draws the viewer into the mind and memories of the creator.

Kirra Galleries will be representing Ruth again at SOFA Chicago 2013
