SOFA CHICAGO 2014

SOFA Art & Design Chicago
Kirra Galleries are exhibiting at SOFA Chicago 2014 - the show opens on Thursday 6 November and we are in the throes of setting up an amazing display of Australian Art Glass at Navy Pier in Chicago, USA.
As part of our exhibition three of the artists we represent will be holding VIP conversations and if you are thinking of coming to the Fair take the opportunity to meet the artists and listen to them speak about their art.

Evelyn Dunstan Evelyn Dunstan
A Small World that Sees No Boundaries
Friday 7 November - 5.30pm
Cast-glass artist Evelyn Dunstan creates finely detailed, nature inspired vessels and sculptures that speak fluently of her love for the flora and fauna of her native New Zealand. Discussing the conflict of the drive to create versus the physical challenge of creating and the benefits of working in isolation, Dunstan provides insights into the influences, technical challenges and determination required to produce her exquisite works.

Scott Chaseling Scott Chaseling
Transitioning Between Ideas
Saturday 8 November - 2.00pm
Glass artist, sculptor and installation artist Scott Chaseling will present a conversation on artistic practice. He will discuss his own efforts to constantly evolve as an artist by means of shifting between creative ideas and an aesthetically and visually differing practice over the course of a career which could be defined by 'signature' works.

Ben Young Ben Young
From Inspiration to Fruition
Sunday 9 November - 12.30pm
Glass artist Ben Young discusses the life experiences which have influenced his work – pieces created from layers of sheet glass to resemble cross-sections of moving water. Ranging from his upbringing in a small beach town on the coast of New Zealand, which inspired his love of the ocean, to his training as a boat builder which has informed his technical practice. A clip from the documentary film "My Name is Ben Young" will also be shown.

FLAME ON GLASS 2014

Cas Davey and Peter Kolliner on Opening Night
Our 12th annual overview of contemporary flame formed glass was very eloquently opened by Christian Arnold on Thursday 11 September 2014.  Chris stepped up to the plate as unfortunately Peter Minson was unable to be at the opening due to the ill health of his partner, Lindsay.   Peter and Lindsay have been part of the Flame on Glass exhibitions since the beginning and their presence was missed by all.

The demonstrations held in the Atrium over the weekend were well attended and we have to thank the artists who gave up their time to spend time at the gallery educating the public on their artform.  A huge thank you to Chris Arnold, Laurie Young, Mark Eliott, Cas Davey, Richard Clements, Raymond Mifsud, Lisa Simmons and Kathryn Wardill for making the exhibition extra special.  Also to those artists who came to the exhibition opening travelling vast distances  – Kathryn Chaston who visited from the South Australian Border, Raymond & Nicky Mifsud who came from Far North Queensland, Mark Eliott from Sydney, Kristin Dibbs from Sydney,  Cas Davey from Castlemaine and Richard Clements from Tasmania, and those Melbourne based artists who were at the opening – Sally Balfour, Wendy Bergamin, Marilyn Hayes, and Anne Oberin.

Artists Demonstrating Chris Arnold Opening Flame On Glass 2014

There is an incredible variety of work on display - the exhibition will close on Sunday 12 October so you still have a few days to see this stunning collection.

We would also like to wish Laurie Young and Chris Arnold all the best for the future – they are moving to America to wow the glass world with their amazing creations – good luck and we hope that you come back to Flame on Glass next year – wouldn’t be the same without you!

SOFA CHICAGO 2014
Kirra Galleries will be visiting Chicago for the 11th consecutive year to exhibit the work of Australian and New Zealand Glass Artists at SOFA (Sculpture Object Functional Art and Design).  Once again we have been favoured with booth 101, at the entrance to the show, which is a very prestigious position for an Australian Gallery.   The exhibition opens on 6 November, and closes on Sunday 9 November 2014. The artists that we are representing are Scott Chaseling, Evelyn Dunstan, Kevin Gordon, Mikyoung Jung, Peter Nilsson, Ruth Oliphant, Tim Shaw, Yusuk√© Takemura, Emma Varga, Maureen Williams, Robert Wynne and Ben Young.
SAVE THE DATE – CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION
As a special thankyou for your continuing support we will be having a Christmas Celebration and exhibition on Thursday December 4 2014 so keep the date free. The opening will be from 6.00 – 9.00pm  and we will be displaying an extensive range of work from our increasing stable of artists. Join us for a glass of Christmas cheer and nibbles while you take advantage of the 15% discount offered on the evening. Those who attend will be eligible to win a $500.00 gift voucher and other exciting prizes.
CITY OF MELBOURNE – LORD MAYOR’S COMMENDATION
Last year Kirra Galleries was recognised in the Bronze Category of the Lord Mayor’s Commendations for more than 10 years of service in Melbourne. As a result Peter Kolliner was interviewed for an article in the August/September City of Melbourne magazine and readers of the publication were offered a prize of a $100 gift voucher for the most creative response to “What do you think of glass as a medium of art?” Selecting a winner was difficult as we received a number of excellent entries but there was one stand out and the prize was awarded to Yvonne Lynch for her answer:

“Glass is the most fabulous medium for creating and bringing together colours of incredible beauty in new combinations which catch the light in a way than cannot be done with any other sort of material. Viewing the blending of colours and shapes in glass sculpture can transport you to another place - and you can constantly find new connections as it changes with every viewing. It will always seem new and never lose its appeal.”

Congratulations Yvonne!
